On the coast of Gimsøy, one of the islands of the Lofoten Archipel in Norway, well known for its rich fishing tradition, waves are playing with this seaweed. Seaweed is a relatively large type of algae, living in the oceans and executing photosynthesis by using chloroplasts. They need salt water, enough light and a solid surface to attach to. Therefore they usually occur along the coast. In the Netherlands seaweeds are found on a depth of a few meters at the most, due to the fact that our seawater is not bright enough to transmit enough sunlight at greater depths, but under favorable conditions seaweed can reach lengths of 60 meters. Kelp (a large Brown Alga) forms, together with many other species, the so called kelp-forests.
