Belgium is divided into two parts, the flat land of Flanders and the hillsides of Wallonia. Being the neighbour of the Netherlands, it is a country I regularly cross

Les Hautes Fagnes 3

2020

Hautes Fagnes means High Fens. A large part of this plateau consists of deposits of moor-peat. A part of it is still active, which means that peat-formation is still occurring. The plateau lies largely in the Ardennes and to a smaller extent in the Eifel and is bordered by Eupen in the north, Monschau in the east, Malmedy in the south and Spa in the west. With peaks just under 700 meters, it is the highest region in Belgium. Apart from peat bogs, the landscape consists of heath-land, sparse grasslands, meadows and lots of forest. In and around the scattered villages are characteristic farms, sometimes surrounded by meter-high beech hedges, which offer protection from wind and rain. For the amount of precipitation is high, rainfall here is the highest of the whole of Belgium, with an average of about 1500 mm per year.

Watou 1

2020

Watou is a village in the Belgian province of West Flanders near the town of Poperinge. We visited Watou on account of the lively, much frequented 'Arts Festival' which takes place here annually in July and August. Every year different visual artists are invited to exhibit contemporary -and often renewing- art on a large number of locations in and around the village for two months. On an evening walk from the campsite, my eye fell on this field along a forest edge. After taking my eye out again, I couldn't resist taking some pictures of it.....

L'Ange Gardien 1

2012

L'Ange Gardien 1
Wallonia (Belgium). It is quiet on this wood-path. The mild autumn light is filtered by the hazelnut bushes and the beech trees along the path. Still green but soon the leaves will take on their autumn colors. For us it’s the end of the journey, this is our final stroll, looking for a couple of stacked stones with a barbed wire fence around it,  which are indicated as a dolmen. In a few hours we’ll be back in the Beemster.

L'Ange Gardien 2

This is a forest path near L'Ange Gardien in Wallonia inBelgium. I was on my way to find a dolmen, which was indicated along the roadside. The dolmen wasn’t anything special: a few piled stones with a fence of barbed wire around it, but the beautiful autumn light shining through the hazelnut bushes along the path, made the walk worth wile.
