Monti Sibillini 3

2023

The Italian National Park Monti Sibillini is part of the Apennines and covers roughly about 70 hectares, most of which are located in Umbria. Although it is one of the smaller parks in Europe, it is not inferior to the larger parks in terms of beauty and diversity. The middle part is formed by the 'Piano Grande', a plateau of about 23 km2, which is surrounded by the highest peaks of the area. The ancient village of Castellucio di Norcia is located on a naturally formed height and is an attraction in itself, due to its isolated location. From there one has a fine view of almost the entire plateau and its enormous dimensions.

Thistle 35

2023

According to the legend this Carline Thistle is named after Charlemagne, who would have discovered the healing benefits of the plant against the plague. But in reality, the name is probably derived from the Latin word for thistle: Carduus. The Dutch name Three Thistle was given to the plant because there are often plants to be found with three flower-heads. It is a biennial plant. The species is hemi-kryptofyt, which means that it forms its new buds on- or a little below the surface, in order to have them protected by the mulch-layer. In this way the plants may survive an unfavorable period, such as the winter, a hot summer or a period with shadow.

Torrente Setta 8

Towards the end of the day we go on an evening stroll along the River Setta, which flows between Bologna and Florence in Italy. The sun sets and its last rays shine through the clouds. The sky slowly turns from yellow and orange to red and finally ends in the darkness of night.
