From Djupvatnet, a large lake on a plateau not far from the famous Geirangerfjord in Norway, one finally arrives after a couple of long tunnels under the mountain area of Strynefjellet, in Hjelledal. A thick layer of clouds lies over this valley surrounded by glaciers, ice caps, mountains and rivers. The climate here is as varied as the landscape. On the East side of the Jostedals-glacier it is cold and dry during the whole winter, whereas the Ottadal valley, situated on the North side and in the 'rain shadow' of the mountains, is wet and extremely fertile.
