A donkey brays over the coastal strip in this part of Slovenia. Under and between the trees we look out over the water of the Gulf of Trieste, which is part of the Adriatic Sea. The gulf covers an area of about 1000 km², with an average depth of 16 meters and a deepest point of only 37 meters below sea level. In the gulf there is a slow current spinning counterclockwise. Its coast is shared by Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. The northern half of the Adriatic is nowhere deeper than about 100 meters, while the southern half is more than 1200 meters deep.
